Hospital social service activities
Diseases severely disrupt people's normal lives and make them helpless. Illness is more painful for the suffering poor patients. The importance and effectiveness of hospital social work is immense in ensuring that sick people receive their basic right of medical care. Among the various public welfare activities carried out under the Department of Social Services, 'Hospital Social Service Activities' is an important day-to-day service activity, which is directly related to the service of the poor, destitute, helpless and downtrodden. Through hospital social service programs, the poor, indigent patients are provided with psychological, family, social, economic and illness-related support, increasing the mental strength of the patient, covering the medical expenses, providing various information to the doctor about the patient's disease and the cause of the disease, and providing support for his rehabilitation after the treatment. .
For the first time in Bangladesh in 1958, 2 (two) medical social workers were appointed in Dhaka Medical College Hospital under the initiative of East Pakistan National Council of Social Welfare. As this program was particularly fruitful, after the establishment of Social Welfare Department in 1961, this project was expanded to Chittagong and Rajshahi Medical College Hospitals, Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital and Chest Hospital in Dhaka. Thus a total of 38 medical social workers were appointed. Then, during the third five-year plan, 12 units were launched in 12 hospitals of the country and later in 1991, 2 in Dhaka metropolis, 1 in Khulna city and 33 in the new district headquarters, totaling 36 units in the development sector in 36 hospitals. In 1994, 8 more hospital units were opened as the program proved fruitful. At present, this program is being conducted in 64 districts including Dhaka metropolis in total 108 units in public and private hospitals at district level and 420 upazila health complexes at upazila level, the total number of which is 528. In order to implement this programme, every Hospital Social Service Office under the Department of Social Services has 'Patient Welfare Societies' registered under the Voluntary Social Welfare Organizations (Registration and Regulation) Ordinance, 1961.
